College of Physics and Technology

About CPST

College of Physics Science and Technology (CPST) is a successor of the former department of applied physics college of science which was founded in 1985. In Sept. 2006, CPST was set up after merging the former department of applied physics, Institute of Applied Nuclear Technology of Shenzhen University, physics department of the former Normal College. Now the college has three teaching units: physics department, department of applied physics, and physics teaching experimental center of Shenzhen University. It has four research institutes: Institute of Thin Film Physics and Application, Institute of Computational Condensed Matter Physics, Institute of Applied Nuclear Technology and Institute of Isotope Application. It has two full time undergraduate program courses-physics and applied physics-and one master degree station of theoretical physics.

Now there are 53 staffs in the college. 11 of them are professors (including 2 PhD student supervisors), 20 of them are associate professors, 31 teachers are PhD holders, and an honorary professor, Dr. Gong Changde, who is an Academician. The guiding principle that College of Physical Science and Technology follows is “sound foundation, extensive knowledge, combining and digesting theories through experimental skills”. Therefore, freshman, sophomore shall take basic courses, while junior and senior will be educated on their interests and intended majors. The course programs were reorganized in 2008 and the new programs include the major of applied physics and physics. The major of applied physics is divided into 3 sub-fields, namely, applied information physics engineering, thin films and low-temperature plasma technology with their application, and applied nuclear technology, while that of physics contains normal education. What we are pursuing is to seek the origin of science and engineering, explore the truth of the universe, and nurture elite to have sound foundation, quick learning skills, high professional qualities, and high adaptive abilities.

Our students who are outstanding in both morality and learning will be rewarded with  university-level scholarships such as“Shenzhen University Scholarship”, “Nankai University Scholarship”, and “Samsung Scholarship”. They can also be rewarded with “Bona Fide” Scholarship and “Jitai stipend” which are available only to the students inside our college. With all these, the students outstanding in both morality and learning will have more opportunities to win scholarships.

Undergraduate Programs:

1.Physics
To nurture our students from math and physics foundation to be skillful people in experiment, computer, and foreign languages and be qualified to further study for higher degrees or to teach in primary and middle schools or do scientific research in physics and engineering, or to work in areas related to physics and engineering technology.

2.Applied Physics
The present course plans to teach the students about the basic physical principles and methods and equip them with sound mathematic foundation, the basic knowledge and experimental skills of computer application and train them in applied basic research, and applied research, scientific development and technology management, so that the students with scientific qualities, abilities to update knowledge and scientific adaptability will meet requirements of the development of high and new technology. To help students develop individuality to meet requirements of the society, the present course offers three course systems: information and physics engineering, application of thin films and cold-plasma technology, and nuclear technology and applications to juniors and seniors. The present course supports students to make an investigation, develop and design products in electronics, communication, optoelectronics, traffic, thin film materials. It also helps them engage in work related to nuclear energy technology, radiation protection and nuclear medicine fields.

Graduate Programs:

Graduate program --- theoretical physics(M.Sci)

Established in 2005, the master degree program of the theoretical physics specialty of College of Physics and Technology has 6 research fields, i.e. Condensed Matters Theory and Computational Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic Nucleus, Nonlinear Physics, Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Thin Film Physics and Structure, and Low-temperature Plasma Physics. The study of this specialty takes 3 years, in which the course study takes 1.5 year or 1-3 semesters. The study time can be extended to 3.5 or 4 years for part time students with a consideration of their job.

The postgraduate program of this specialty integrates course study with scientific research, and supervisor’s individual instructions with group supervision. It focuses on expanding postgraduates’ knowledge of basic theory and cultivating their comprehensive quality; it emphasizes more on adopting such teaching methods as heuristic teaching, discussion teaching, and participatory teaching, with attaching great importance to a series of effective methods such as discussion class, reading report class, academic forum, frontier lectures, etc., and with strengthening the cultivation of creativity; it stresses on the importance of participation in scientific research to cultivate and improve the scientific research ability of postgraduates. The postgraduates of this specialty are competent in various jobs on teaching and scientific research.

Teachers’ achievement in scientific research
College of Physics Science and Technology has made great achievement in scientific research and some achievements can catch up with the frontier of the world. Since 2006, we have published more than 100 dissertations, among which 60 dissertations have been documented by SCI、EI、ISTP, and have published 2 series of teaching materials, and have presided and participated in more than 30 research projects, among which one is national 863 project, 10 projects are funded by national natural science foundation. The total amount of scientific research funding is 3 million. Transformation of learning and research to product has been greatly promoted since Professor Chu Jiguo invented “molecular pumps” which is of world class. Many teachers with outstanding scientific research have earned many awards from Guangdong Province Government, Shenzhen Government, and Shenzhen University, etc.

Students’ achievement in scientific research
Our college has been paying attention to cultivate students’ skills in scientific research. In recent years, our undergraduates under the guidance of teachers have published scientific research papers in important national journals such as Journal of Image and Graphics, Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology, Journal of Shenzhen University, and College Physics, etc. Some of these papers have been documented in SCI、EI. In 2007, 20% of the students in our college had their proposals funded by the related departments of the University.

Four scientific research agecies in our college

(1) The Institute of Thin Film Physics and Applications
The Institute of Thin Film Physics and Applications, Shenzhen University, is a specific research institute, and it was founded on integrating the advantages of the subject with the needs of the local economic development. The institute has a very strong research team which consists of 3 professors, 3 associated professors and 3 lecturers. All the research staff have Ph.D degrees and graduated from pronounced universities or institutes inside or outside China. The institute also has excellent research facilities. It has the following thin film fabrication instruments such as dual ions beam (DIB) sputtering, ECR sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, E-beam evaporation, etc. Additionally, it has the following characterization instruments such as Lambda 950 spectrophotometer, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Leica micropolariscope, contact angle measurement instrument, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, etc. The institute has long been committed to the research about thin film fabrication, characterization and application. It has obtained and/or finished more than 10 research projects which were funded by the national natural science foundation of China (NNSF), the natural science foundation of Guangdong province, the science and technology plan of Shenzhen, etc. In recent years, its research areas include novel thin film solar cells, optical thin film devices, high-sensitivity thin films and their physical effects, etc.
